Speyer: City Hall

The Project: Transformation into a multifunction centre

Gerling +Arendt submitted a concept of renovation for the municipal hall of Speyer in July 2002.
The objective of the renovation was the transformation of the building into a multifunctional venue that also should be available for local clubs, associations and institution of the city. The client decided in favour of cost reduced option of a complete renovation that mainly implied the improvement of the operating.

The project implied essentially the new conception and renewal of

  • Safety installations of the building
  • Technical installations in general
  • The stage technical equipment
  • Substance of the building itself
  • Fireprotection installations

The renovation measures were to be realised by maintaining as much as possible the exterior structure of the building. At the same time, the adaptation to the existing rules and standards for venues and the realisation of innovative measures for the maintenance of the structure of the building had to be assured.

The rather colourless building with the typical shape from the 60ies got a stronger contour within the cityscape.
