Speyer: City hallHistoryThe Municipal Hall of Speyer was completed in 1963. For more than two decades it constituted the centre of the cultural life of the city of Speyer. Since the midst of the 1980ies however, the hall gradually lost its attraction, the technology was outdated, the hall was not up-to-date anymore. After several efforts, a renovation could be undertaken that transformed the municipal hall into a modern congress centre and venue for all kinds of performances. The municipal has a big audience, originally with a centre stage and a small audience. Because of the old technology, the little attractive outer appearance and operating problems the hall was old fashioned after 20 years of existence. In 1985, a concept for the restructuring of the building and transformation into a congress centre failed. The plan to demolish the building and to rebuild it on another site was not realised either, for political reasons. In the year 1996, a fire destroyed the small audience. Measures to maintain the building were reduced to a minimum because of the unsure situation (stop of investments since 1986). For the renovation of the hall however it was necessary to renovate all technical equipment and to undertake complex measures at the building itself in order to assure the safety and maintenance of the building for the future. This project started with an expertise by Gerling and Arendt.
