Speyer: City hallArchitectureThe building looks rather plain - it is an almost closed body with no transparency. With its cold form of the 1960ies and the pale colours it did not look very attractive. A sensitive transformation of single architecture components as the inner courtyard or the intentional maintenance of the structure of the building help to maintain the identity of the building in the consciousness of the citizens as a place known to them. The facades in front of the small and the big audience were generously opened. Now, these audiences can have gained a friendly atmosphere, they can be used with daylight. With flexible darkening devices, the respond to all modern requirements of a congress centre, a venue and a communication centre. The dimensions of the audiences have not changed, but their using is much more flexible thanks to the new technical installation. In order to be able to use the municipal hall as quickly as possible, first the small audience was renovated in form of an advanced measure in 2002. In a second phase, the renovation of the complete building including the big audience and the foyer was undertaken. In parallel to the two construction phases, the complete facilities including all side rooms was basically renovated. Since July 2003, the public has the possibility to visit the whole centre with its modern technology and the newly designed space.
