Architecture and Interior Space: New Form in an Old Structure

The architecture of the theatre was conceived as a powerful solitaire which restrained the efforts for extension of the building.

For architectural reasons, the main part of the planned extensions of the building was therefore placed in the basement or added to the main building by adapting form and material to the existing structure. Thus, the installation of new windows for the façade was very complicated. New profiles had to be developed for the specific forms of the windows when these were renewed.

A particularly difficult measure was the production of vertical and horizontal fire sections. The missing emergency exits from the balconies could not be placed in the existing building. A staircase, combined with a goods lift in the inner yard and a simple outdoor staircase in front of the north façade could be realised without modifying the existing architecture of the audience significantly.

In order to improve the acoustics and the lighting of the proscenium, the ceiling above the proscenium was restructured. The covering of the proscenium walls was renewed and adapted to the new structure of the wall and the audience.

The new lift created a vertical transport facility between the foyer and the spaces in the cellar.

The entry foyer at stage level received a new wardrobe. The upper foyer including bar and lounge was revaluated in optics and function through the installation of bars and catering posts. The chandelier and wall lamps in the upper foyer were restored and were kept as a reminiscence of their period.
