Leipzig: Concert Hall of the Academy for MusicThe Idea: The Concert Hall as a Resonance BoxThe former building of the Academy for Music and Theatre consisted of two parts with aisles. The concert hall was built on the site a former aisle that was destroyed in the war. It was integrated into the courtyard yard of the building, constituting an element of connection. The Hall was built on columns, it became a resonance box, a musical instrument. One side of the audience has windows and thus opens onto the courtyard, creating a connection to the outer world. The audience was planned to serve for different kinds of performances: mainly as a rehearsal space, but also for public concerts and theatre performances. The variety of uses requires different acoustic conditions. Variable reverberation times can be obtained by cloth surfaces that can be hung in front of the wall according to the necessities. The wooden covering but also the wooden structure itself have a positive influence on the sound and the reverberation frequencies. A big attraction of the concert hall is the new organ that could be built thanks to donations.
