Leipzig: Concert Hall of the Academy for MusicHistoryThe Academy of Music is considered to be the oldest conservatory in Germany: the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who served in Leipzig as General Musical Director since 1835, founded the conservatory in 1843. In world war II, mainly the old concert hall of the Academy was strongly hit and completely destroyed. Only the main and the northern aisle were reconstructed. After diverse initiatives for the reconstruction, an international architecture competition was undertaken. Gerber Architects from Dortmund won the first prize. They did the planning and realisation of the project. In April 1999, the construction started, and in April 2001 the concert hall could be handed over the Academy of Music.
