Bamberg: E.T.A. Hoffmann Theatre

History

The theatre of Bamberg, E.T. A. Hoffmann theatre, was built in 1802 using parts of a former festivity hall. In 1808 it was extended by adding a floor to the theatre and the construction of audiences called “Harmony”. In 1862 a basic renovation was realized in the neoclassical style. The theatre was continuously extended and modified. The introduction of electricity in 1907 marked an important step.

The audiences were not reconstructed before 1955 to 1958. In the following years, workshops, rehearsal stages and a painter’s workshop were added to the building – unfortunately without any overall concept.

The lack of space and serious safety defaults made a renovation more urgent than ever. In 1997 a competition for bids was advertised. The jury gave the 1st prize to Springer Architects – Berlin / Hanover and recommended their design for realisation. The project started in 1999. The project target was to improve the situation in regard to space and function but also to an integration of the disparate building into the historic city centre.
